The MFA No Kill Shelter

The MFA operates a no-kill shelter. The Winnipeg Humane Society refers all inquires for adoption or surrender directly to the MFA. The shelter is located in a member's home, where they receive 24 hour care. All ferrets surrendered to the shelter receive an up-to-date Distemper Vaccination and are assessed for health and personality.

Thanks to the generosity of our membership, the shelter ferrets have warm snugly blankets and hammocks, lots of toys, roomy cages for single or multiple surrenders, and an opportunity to play and exercise each and every day. Volunteers ( by appointment only ) are welcome to come out to play and exercise the shelter ferrets or help with the shelter housekeeping duties.

The MFA receives no outside funding or grants to operate the shelter. Monies are raised through several fund raising events held during the year and donations are gladly accepted. We have a wonderful selection of hammocks, sleep sacks, and cages available for purchase. The MFA also has a terrific pamphlet called Duck Soup for Ferrets available for $15.00. All monies go towards shelter costs.

Your annual $ 30.00 donation, ( with membership benifits ) helps to support our no-kill shelter.

The MFA Shelter is operated out of a Private home. Adoption and Surrenders by Appointment Only.

No ferret in need will be refused. Age has no bearing; our elderly ferrets that can not be adopted, are available for fostering through our Fostering Program. A member may choose to open their home to a hard-to-place ferret. The member provides the daily care needs: food, water, litter, treats, toys and lots of love.

The foster time frame can be for three months, six months or in special cases, permanently. The shelter retains ownership of the ferret and is responsible for medical costs due to accidental injury or illness. Blockages are not covered. Should a permanent home become available, the fostering member has first choice on adopting the ferret.

For more information on our Fostering Program, See our forms & application section, or please call the shelter operator Deb Kelley at 661-1389.

( Please keep in mind...in order to foster a ferret you must be or become a member of the MFA and you must have some previous experience looking after ferrets or have educated yourself on the care and needs of ferrets. )

We also have Our SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM: The ferret remains at the shelter. The member agrees to provide a monthly payment towards the ferret’s daily requirements. The member will receive a photo and bio of their sponsored ferret.

They will also receive a quarterly update. The member of course, is welcome to visit and play with their sponsored ferret. This program is great for someone who can not bring another ferret into their home but still wishes to help a ferret in need. See our forms & application section, or please contact Deb Kelley at the shelter (661-1389).

Ferrets are intelligent..curious..playfull.. persistant..inventive..and fun.. BUT...they are not for everyone..

We do not ship ferrets, nor do we breed.

Through the doors of our shelter, and many like ours ferrets have a variety of personalities. Some loved, some abused, some from homes where the former owner had no clue on care but purchased the animal on impulse, just to find they cannot deal with the training. We are dedicated to finding loving, caring homes for every ferret.

Before you browse the rest of our site, ask yourself if you can open your heart to a shelter animal, whether it is ferret, cat, dog, bird or reptile. Can you love a fur angel that has had it's little heart broken ? Can you give the pet a loving home for it's lifetime ?

The rewards that await are countless, their love endless. Can you make the commitment?

Please note, however, that we are a small, non-profit animal welfare organization. We do not have any paid staff, and while we will do our best to help people with ferret related problems, we can not provide a free boarding service nor a free veterinary support service.

The MFA Association can offer members a variety of services as described on this web site.
